Klio vs Notion for tracking AI coding work

Notion is a flexible workspace for docs and databases; Klio is a purpose-built board coding agents run over MCP. When to use which, or both.

Plenty of side projects are planned in Notion: a page for the idea, a database of tasks, a few notes on the stack. It's flexible, pleasant to write in, and Notion offers an MCP server so agents can read and edit pages and databases.

The flexibility is also the catch. A Notion task database is whatever you made it, so an agent has to be told how your database works: which property means status, which view is "next", what counts as done. Klio is the opposite trade-off: less flexible, but every rule an agent needs is built in.

The short version

  • Choose Notion if you want one place for writing, specs, notes and lightweight tasks, and you value flexibility over structure.
  • Choose Klio if agents are doing the building and you want them to run the work loop themselves, with claims, criteria, review and a resume note.
  • Use both: specs and long-form thinking in Notion; the stories agents build in Klio.

What Klio is, in one paragraph

Klio is a hosted project board for AI coding agents. Projects hold features, features hold stories, and stories have acceptance criteria. Agents connect over MCP (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Zed, Gemini CLI, Claude.ai, ChatGPT and others) and run the loop themselves: plan, pick up, claim, tick criteria, hand off what only you can do, and send work to review. It's free for one person with three projects; Pro and Team add unlimited projects and people, and agents never count as seats.

When Notion is the better choice

Notion wins when the work is mostly thinking and writing: product specs, research, design notes, meeting notes, a personal wiki. If your tasks are light and you already live in Notion, connecting its MCP server and describing your task database in your rules file can work well.

When Klio is the better choice

Klio wins when the work is mostly agents building. Instead of teaching each agent how your database works, the agent calls tools that already encode the workflow:

  • get_next_work returns the next story, skipping anything waiting on unfinished work.
  • start_issue claims it so a parallel agent picks something else.
  • check_criterion ticks criteria as they pass, and complete_issue sends it to review with a summary.
  • flag_for_human puts what only you can do in your inbox.

And because every project has a resume note, you can leave a side project for weeks and pick it up with one word.

Using them together

Write the spec in Notion, then ask your agent to plan it into a Klio feature: "Read this spec and plan it as a Klio feature with small stories and acceptance criteria." Link the Notion page in the feature summary so the reasoning stays one click away.

Questions

Is Klio a Notion alternative?

For tracking the work your coding agents do, yes. For docs, specs and wikis, Notion is the better tool; many people keep specs in Notion and the stories agents build in Klio.

Can coding agents use Notion?

Yes. Notion offers an MCP server, so MCP clients can read and edit pages and databases. You'll need to describe how your task database works so the agent uses it consistently.

Can Klio import my Notion tasks?

There's no importer. The quickest path is to give your agent the Notion spec or task list and ask it to plan it into a Klio feature with stories and acceptance criteria.
