Klio vs GitHub Issues for AI coding agents
GitHub Issues lives next to your code and PRs; Klio is a board coding agents run over MCP, with claims, criteria and review. When each fits best.
On this page
GitHub Issues is where a lot of software work is already tracked: it's free with every repository, it sits next to the code and pull requests, and GitHub Projects adds boards and fields on top. GitHub also publishes an MCP server, so agents can read and write issues. For many projects that's enough.
Klio takes a different starting point. Instead of a ticket system agents can access, it's a workflow agents run: every step from "what's next" to "ready for review" is an MCP tool with the rules built in.
The short version
- Choose GitHub Issues if you want tracking right next to your code and PRs, your process already lives on GitHub, or the project is open source and outside contributors file issues.
- Choose Klio if agents do most of the building and you want them to pick up, claim, finish and hand back work themselves, across several agents and several projects.
- Use both for open-source projects: public issues on GitHub, the agent's implementation stories on Klio.
Side by side
| GitHub Issues + Projects | Klio | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Inside each GitHub repository | A hosted board across all your projects |
| MCP | GitHub's MCP server exposes issues, PRs and more | Every step of the agent loop is an MCP tool |
| Linking to code | Native: issues close from PRs and commits | Records the repo and branch; stories link by ID |
| "What's next" for an agent | Your own query or labels | get_next_work, reserved for that agent |
| Claims between agents | Assignee, by convention | start_issue claims; others are refused |
| Acceptance criteria | Task lists in the issue body | Criteria the agent ticks one by one |
| Review gate | Pull request review | Story review on the board, plus your PR review |
| Hand-offs to you | Comments, mentions | Inbox items with exact steps |
| Resume note | Not a concept | Rewritten as each story completes |
| Public contributions | Excellent | Not designed for it |
| Price | Included with GitHub | Free for one person and three projects |
What Klio is, in one paragraph
Klio is a hosted project board for AI coding agents. Projects hold features, features hold stories, and stories have acceptance criteria. Agents connect over MCP (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Zed, Gemini CLI, Claude.ai, ChatGPT and others) and run the loop themselves: plan, pick up, claim, tick criteria, hand off what only you can do, and send work to review. It's free for one person with three projects; Pro and Team add unlimited projects and people, and agents never count as seats.
When GitHub Issues is the better choice
If your team's process is pull requests and code review on GitHub, keeping issues there removes a tool. Issues close automatically from commits and PRs, everyone already has an account, and open-source contributors can file and discuss bugs in public. GitHub's own coding agent features also integrate tightly with issues. For a project like that, connect the GitHub MCP server to your agents and use labels and a short section in your rules file to describe how agents should pick and update issues.
When Klio is the better choice
Klio is the better fit when you want the board to drive the agents rather than describe the work for people:
- "Continue" means something.
get_next_workpicks the next story by priority and order, skips stories waiting on others, and reserves it so two agents never get the same one. - Criteria are a checklist the agent works through, not text in an issue body it may or may not reread.
- One board across projects. If you build several things, each keeps its own plan, progress and resume note, and you see them all in one place.
- The rest of the project's state. Services, environments, deploys and which env vars are set where, kept current by the agents.
- Hand-offs that don't get lost. Steps only you can do (keys, DNS, billing) land in an inbox instead of a comment thread.
Using them together
For open-source work, a clean split is: discussion and bug reports on GitHub Issues; the implementation plan an agent works through on Klio, with the GitHub issue linked from the story. Klio records the repository from git remote, so agents always know which repo a project belongs to.
Questions
Is Klio a GitHub Issues alternative?
For agent-driven development it can replace GitHub Issues as the place agents pick up and finish work. For open-source projects and PR-centric teams, GitHub Issues stays the better home for public issues and discussion.
Can coding agents use GitHub Issues?
Yes. GitHub publishes an MCP server that gives agents access to issues and pull requests, and GitHub's own coding agent works from issues.
Does Klio connect to GitHub?
Klio records each project's repository and branch from git remote, and agents link work by story ID. Pull requests and code review stay on GitHub.
